How much noise reduction can I actually expect in a condo?

Most Toronto condo party walls test around STC 50–54, which is why you hear conversations and television. A properly decoupled assembly with Mass Loaded Vinyl and damped double drywall typically lands at STC 63–68 — roughly an 80–85% perceived reduction in airborne noise. We measure your existing wall and give you a target rating in writing before work starts.

Will soundproofing take away a lot of living space?

Accepted Answer

Our standard wall build-up adds 1.5" to 2.5" of depth per treated wall — usually a few inches of room width in total. Ceilings lose about 1.5" to 2". Where headroom or square footage is critical we use high-mass, low-profile assemblies that trade a couple of STC points for thickness.

Do I need condo board approval before installation?

Accepted Answer

In most Toronto buildings, yes. Because we work only on the interior face of your unit and never penetrate structural or demising elements, approval is normally straightforward. We supply the assembly drawings, product data sheets, WSIB and liability certificates, and an elevator/loading-dock schedule your property manager needs.

What is the difference between thermal insulation and acoustic insulation?

Accepted Answer

Thermal insulation slows heat transfer; acoustic insulation absorbs airborne energy inside a cavity. Batt insulation alone gains only a few STC points. Real isolation comes from the three other levers: mass, decoupling, and damping. Insulation is one component of an assembly, never a soundproofing solution on its own.
